Make Skin All One Color at Home

Having a bright and flawless skin is the dream of all women. These beauty standards vary from country to country; in Indonesia, for example, fair skin ("white") is slightly more "yellow" than other countries like Korea and Japan – where the preferred skin color is pale white.

Fair skin is synonymous with "pretty", probably because faired-skin people can wear any color, compared to their dark or brown skinned counterparts. Despite this narrow view of beauty, many people still choose to do expensive and painful treatments, such as chemical peels or vitamin C injections. The amount of skin whitening products is also growing from time to time, making it more confusing for potential customers.

According to Dr. Windy Miryana, SpKK, our skin cannot be bleached with any treatments. Although there are some methods that worked, they are not completely safe. "If the face skin tone is different than the hand, (the treatment) might contain heavy metals such as mercury," she says.

Before you spend hundreds of thousands to millions of rupiah for skin-lightening procedures, try some of these natural remedies that you can do at home – not only easy and fast, but also affordable and safe for your skin.

Lighten Your Face Skin Tone

"Our epidermis is continuously making new skin cells every 14-21 days, then surely the dead skin cells build up," Dr. Windy explains why skin can look dull, adding that night creams or chemical peels could help exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin.

Before you get confused, try these DIY home remedies you can find in your kitchen. Everyone has unique skin type, so make sure you understand your own skin condition and try several recipes until you find one that really suits your skin. Do not worry! There are a lot of goodness in nature we can use as skin-lightening treatments:

Coconut has been known as a powerful cleansing food that speeds up healing results by thoroughly flushing out all toxins. Coconut oil also has similar effect on body, especially virgin coconut oil. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which considered as a healthier saturated fat that will be converted into monolaurin in the body – serves to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses, as well as fatty acids. If you have dry skin, just use coconut oil as a moisturizer for your face or skin. In the market, virgin coconut oil (VCO) can be found in bottles, but you can also produce it at home.

How to do it:

  • Leave a bowl of coconut milk that was squeezed out of 5 coconuts overnight, then skim the coconut cream in the top layer.
  • Put the fire on "high", and heat up a non-sticky pan over the stove
  • Move the coconut cream into a skillet and fry it for around 30-40 minutes until the coconut becomes brown, then put it on a glass through a strainer. Five coconuts can produce around 300 ml of coconut oil.
  • Let it cool down before we can put it into a glass bottle

Lighten Underarm Skin

The general underarm area sometimes does require extra attention. Dr. Windy says, since the skin is in a crease area, underarms are going through a lot of friction – especially if you like wearing tight clothes. Repeated frictions in this area makes the skin color around your armpit darker. Some people said underarm shaving can also cause a darkening of skin. However, Dr. Windy reveals another fact.

"If the skin was scraped during shaving, the wound could darken the skin color in that area, because the healing process of a wound usually ends up with three possibilities – a darker skin color, same color, or even lighter than the skin color around that area," the medical graduate from Airlangga University explains. She would suggest anyone to regularly exfoliate the skin twice or three times a week to maintain the brightness level of the skin.

In order to obtain a maximum result, take note on some of these things:

  • Do not shave your underarms, especially with a dull razor. Not only that you would need to shave often, this method increases the risk of cuts and scrapes. Try sugar-wax or use an epilator instead to pull out unwanted hair from its root.

  • Reduce frequency of shaving during menstruation, because the skin usually gets more sensitive than the regular days
